All of the students in grades 4 to 6 have a weekly Drama session with our Drama teacher, Glynis Angell. In Drama the students develop theatre making skills and gain interpersonal skills through working in groups.
Students explore their own creative expression through voice work, physical skills and performance. They learn skills in improvisation, character development, clown, mime, script work and storytelling. Students learn different ways to tell a story in performance, develop drama from real life situations and explore dramas from diverse cultures. In Grades 5 and 6 the students make iMovies to explore translating live performance into film.
In Drama there is a strong focus on teamwork and collaboration skills, as well as encouraging individual achievement. Students gain confidence performing in front of others, and learn how to appreciate and give feedback regarding the work of other students.
In Grade 6 all of the students write, edit and rehearse their own dramas for their term 3 show. A professional visual artist guides their process to design and construct their own set and props, with help from the Grade 4 and 5 students. The show is a highlight of the students’ learning in Drama.
During term 4 Grade 4 and 5 students also create their own original
show to perform for younger students in the school. The performance is the ideal platform for the students to showcase the skills they have learnt throughout the year in Drama.
