Wellbeing

Health and Wellbeing

At Preston Primary School, we believe that student wellbeing is fundamental to learning and to a positive school experience.

We are committed to creating a school environment where every child feels safe, included, respected, connected and supported.

We celebrate the diversity of our students, families and community.

Our approach recognises that every student is an individual, with their own strengths, experiences, interests and needs. We work together with students, families and staff to promote positive wellbeing, build resilience, encourage engagement and provide support when challenges arise.

Our School Values
Respect • Resilience • Responsibility • Learning Success

At Preston Primary School, our values are not taught as something separate from school life. They are woven through and embedded in everything we do, every day and are a shared language that guide the way we learn, teach, communicate, build relationships and contribute to our community.

Our values are not an isolated program. They are reflected in our classrooms, playgrounds, relationships, wellbeing practices, leadership opportunities, behaviour support, learning and partnerships with families.

We encourage every member of our school community to live our values, model our values and grow through our values.

Together, our values help create a safe, inclusive, respectful and engaging environment where every child can belong, participate, learn and thrive.

Wellbeing Across The Year

The RRRR (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships) program is a mandated school-based program that helps students develop:

  • Resilience – managing challenges and building confidence.
  • Rights and Respect – understanding human rights, equality and treating others fairly.
  • Relationships – building healthy, safe and respectful relationships.
  • Social and emotional skills – recognising emotions, solving problems and making positive choices.

The program from Grades Prep-6 supports students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to stay safe, respect others and build healthy relationships.

At Preston Primary School the RRRR curriculum has been embedded in our teaching and is taught throughout the year.

Respectful Relationships

URSTRONG

URSTRONG is taught throughout the year. It is an evidence based wellbeing and friendship program that teaches children the skills and language they need to build healthy and positive relationships. Through engaging lessons and practical strategies, students learn how to identify different types of friendships, manage conflict in a respectful way, recognise healthy and unhealthy behaviours and learn to respond to friendship challenges.

The program empowers students with clear tools and shared language to support one another, solve problems independently and strengthen their social confidence. By developing these friendship skills, we are helping our students create a culture of kindness, resilience and strong connections across our school community.

Refer to the ABOUT URSTRONG flyer for information about the program.

Butterfly Body Bright

In Term 2, the Butterfly Body Bright program is taught across all year levels. It is a whole school evidence based initiative of the Butterfly Foundation that aims to promote positive body image in all students so they can thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

The Wellbeing team and students undertake a range of activities as part of our Health & Wellbeing Unit to help deepen our understanding and encourage meaningful conversations about our own bodies and those of others.

Families also play an important role in helping to promote positive body image in children.

You can visit the Body Bright Families webpage to access resources that will help you foster healthy attitudes and behaviours towards the body, eating and physical activity, in your home.

Tip sheet sheets can also be found at www.butterflybodybright.org.au/resources

This program empowers our students to be:

  • Brave in their bodies, by empowering them to stand up for their own bodies and for others.
  • Resilient by strengthening their media literacy skills, by helping them to deconstruct and challenge the messages and images they hear and see.
  • Inclusive of all bodies and knowing that bodies look and function differently … and that is something to celebrate - so that everyone feels like they belong in the world and our school community.
  • Grateful for their body, focusing on the things it can do and appreciating themselves for their inner qualities and strengths so that they can see their worth and value, beyond their body shape and appearance.
  • Happy in their bodies by engaging in fun and joyful movement, regularly.
  • Thoughtful with their eating by helping children to learn to listen to their body cues, be mindful when eating, and to be curious and non-judgemental towards foods. These approaches can help to build a positive relationship with food and eating.

Zones of Regulation

Another key focus in Wellbeing is the ongoing use of Zones of Regulation check-ins, which have become an important part of our daily routine. These check-ins support both students and adults in recognising and managing their emotions effectively.

By regularly identifying how we are feeling, we can respond to situations with greater awareness and self-control.

Developing an understanding of our own emotions, as well as those of others, is essential, as emotions strongly influence our daily interactions and are closely connected to our behaviours.
